An Cór - New choirs wanted for RTÉ ONE TV

After a successful first series Sideline Productions Irish language choir competition An Cór returns to RTÉ ONE in March 2011.

What happens when you cast 6 largely English-speaking choirs and they have to learn, rehearse and perform the most popular Gaelic songs ever sung by Irish school children?

The result is the bi-lingual TV series An Cór (The Choir) - an Irish language singing competition with a difference, broadcast over 4 shows during Seachtain na Gaeilge in March 2011.

Presented by Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin, An Cór features 6 choirs of all styles and from all corners of Irleand competing for the An Cór Trophy and 1000 euros prize. To get to the final all the 6 choirs compete in a choir off in each of the first 3 shows with the winner of each heat going through to the grand final at The Helix in Dublin in front of their supporters.

All the choirs from series 1 (from Dublin, Bray, Belfast, Limerick, Sligo and eventual winners from Kilkenny) all enjoyed the challenge and experience of immersing themselves in the culture, language and history of their traditional Irish song plus improved their level of Irish by having to understand the words and rehearse the pronunciation to impress the three judges.

Viewers learn the back story of the songs and Aoibhinn, a traditional Irish musician herself, meets the choirs as they attempt to impress the judging panel with their final polished version.

Do you feel your choir has what it takes to rise to the challenge? To take part in this series, Sideline and RTÉ are seeking choirs from all styles and nationalities over the ages of 18.

What is important is that the choir was formed prior to the competition, committed to a high standard of performance, led by a charismatic choirmaster or conductor and possibly has an interesting history itself.

Remember the closing date is Tuesday September 14th.

Choirs that meet the criteria and contain an Irish-speaking member (or members) are particularity encouraged to enter, and all choirs have to be available initially for auditions and filming on selected dates between September and December 2010.

Note the application process is merely an expression of interest and not an indication to the choir that they will be asked to take part in any stage of the TV programme.
